- In 1969, Viktor P. Savinykh graduated from the Moscow Institute of Engineers of Geodesy, Aerial Photography and Cartography (MIIGAiK; Moscow, USSR) in Optoelectronic Instruments.
- In 1969–1978, he was an employee of the Experimental Mechanical Engineering Central Design Bureau (since 1974—NPO Energia; Korolev, Moscow oblast, USSR).
- From 1978 to 1988, he was a member of the Soviet Cosmonaut Team.
- In 1981, he flew into space as the Flight Engineer on the Soyuz T-4 spacecraft and on the 5th Main Expedition to the Salyut-6 station.
- In 1985, he made a space flight as the Flight Engineer on board the Soyuz T-13 spacecraft and then he became the Member of the 4th Main Expedition at the Salyut-7 station.
- In 1985, he defended his thesis titled “Orientation of Spacecraft in Near-Earth Orbit” for the Candidate of Science degree in Engineering.
- In 1988, he performed a space flight as the Flight Engineer on the Soyuz TM-5 spacecraft. During the flight, a docking with the Mir station was performed.
- In 1989–2007, he was the Rector of the Moscow State University of Geodesy and Cartography (Moscow, Russia).
- In 1990, he defended his thesis titled “Exploring the Earth’s Upper Atmosphere from Manned Stations” for the Doctor of Science degree in Engineering.
- Since 2006, he has been the Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS; Moscow, Russia).
- Since 2007 to the present, he has been the President of the Moscow State University of Geodesy and Cartography.
- Since 2019, he has been the Full Member of the RAS, Member of the Department of Earth Sciences at the RAS, Member of the Scientific Council at the RAS on the issue of “Coordination-Temporal and Navigational Support.”
V.P. Savinykh is a member of the scientific and expert councils of the Russian Geographical Society, Honorary Member of the D.S. Rozhdestvensky Optical Society, and Member of the Expert Council of the National Award “Crystal Compass.”
