Academician Yu.V. Gulyaev is a major organizer of national science. On his initiative, branches of IRE were established in Saratov (1979) and Ulyanovsk (1990). He was one of founders and organizers of the Saratov Scientific Center of RAS (1981). On his initiative, the Department of Microelectronics Technology was spun off into a separate Institute for Microwave and Semiconductor Electronics of RAS (2002).

Research Interests

Academician Yu.V. Gulyaev is a well-known scientist in the field of radiophysics, electronics, and informatics, one of the founders of new areas of solid state physics and technology—acoustoelectronics, acoustooptics, spin-wave electronics. In 1968, independently and simultaneously with the American physicist J. Blustein, Yu.V. Gulyaev predicted and studied a new fundamental type of surface-active waves known in the international literature as Blustein–Gulyaev waves.

Yu.V. Gulyaev made a great contribution to the development of acoustooptics and its practical applications. Together with academicians V.A. Kotelnikov, A.M. Prokhorov, Zh.I. Alferov, N.D. Devyatkov, V.I. Pustovoit, Professor V.P. Gapontsev and some other scientists and engineers, he was one of the organizers of the research and practical application of fibre optic systems in communications.

Yu.V. Gulyaev made a major contribution to the development of spin-wave (magnetic) electronics. He predicted the existence of second spin waves in ferromagnetics (analogous to the second sound in liquid helium predicted by L.D. Landau) and constructed their hydrodynamic theory.

Yu.V. Gulyaev proposed and successfully developed a new approach to the study of human body functioning, based on a comprehensive measurement of the physical fields and electrophysical characteristics of the human body during its life activity. New methods of noninvasive early medical diagnostics have been developed and continue to be developed based on these measurements together with teams from a number of leading medical organizations.

Publications and Academic Advising

Yu.V. Gulyaev published individually and with co-authors more than 700 scientific works, including 11 monographs, and received about 100 certificates of authorship for inventions and patents. Yu.V. Gulyaev trained more than 100 candidates, more than 20 of which became doctors of science, including one academician and one corresponding member of the RAS.

Work in Scientific Journals

Yu.V. Gulyaev is the Editor-in-Chief of the following journals:
