In 1974, Yu.A. Chaplygin graduated from the Department of Physics and Technology at the Moscow Institute of Electronic Technology (MIET; Moscow, USSR).

From 1974 to 1998, he rose from Postgraduate Student to Vice-Rector for Science at MIET.

In 1995, he defended his thesis titled “Silicon Microelectronic Sensors Based on CMOS Design and Technology” for the Doctor of Science degree in Engineering.

In 1998–2016, he was the Rector of the National Research University Moscow Institute of Electronic Technology (NRU MIET).

Since 1999 to the present, he is the Head of the Department of Integrated Electronics and Microsystems at NRU MIET.

Since 2003, he has been the Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS).

Since 2016 to the present, Academician at the RAS, Member of the Department of Nanotechnologies and Information Technologies, President of NRU MIET.

Yu.A. Chaplygin has solved a number of fundamental and applied problems of creating integrated devices for information reception and processing based on microelectronics technology. He has developed and put into production a number of integrated systems that are used in telephone communications equipment, cryptographic and special equipment, on-board systems of Ekspress series telecommunications satellites, etc.

Yu.A. Chaplygin is Member of the Computing, Location, Telecommunication Systems and Elemental Base Section of the Nanotechnology and Information Technology Department at the RAS.

Publications

Yu.A. Chaplygin is the author of over 250 scientific papers, 5 monographs, 20 certificates of authorship and patents, 34 publications in Scopus and Web of Science.

He is the Editor-in-Chief of the Izvestiya Vysshikh Uchebnykh Zavedenii. Elektronika journal and a member of editorial boards of 5 scientific and technical journals.

Awards

Yu.A. Chaplygin is Winner of the Russian Federation Government Prize in Education (2010), Commander of the Order of Honor and the Order of Friendship, Winner of the Russian Federation President Prize in Education, and three-time Winner of the Government Prize of the Russian Federation in Science and Technology.
