- In 1970, V.B. Betelin graduated from the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics at the Lomonosov Moscow State University.
- In 1981, he defended his thesis for the Candidate of Science degree.
- In 1986, he defended his thesis for the Doctor of Science degree.
- In 1991, he received his Professor title.
- In 1984–1986, he was the Head of the Laboratory of the Scientific Council for the Complex Problem of Cybernetics of the USSR Academy of Sciences.
- From 1986 to 1988, he was the Deputy Director for Research at the Institute of Design Automation of the USSR Academy of Sciences.
- From 1989 to 1990, he was the Acting Director, and from 1990 to 2015, Director of the Scientific Research Institute for System Analysis, RAS.
- In 1997, he was elected the Corresponding Member of the RAS in the Department of Informatics, Computer Science and Automation (speciality Programming Automation).
- Since 1997, he has been the Director of the Institute of Microtechnology at the Russian Research Center “Kurchatov Institute.”
- In 2003, he was elected the Full Member of the RAS, Department of Information Technology and Computer Systems (speciality Information Technology and Automation).
- Since 2010, he has been the Scientific Supervisor for the creation and application of supercomputing technologies in civil industries at the Russian Federal Nuclear Center—All-Russian Research Institute of Experimental Physics; Member of Scientific Advisory Board of Non-commercial Organization “Foundation for Development of the Center for Development and Commercialization of New Technologies” (Skolkovo).
- In 2016, the Conference of Scientific Workers of the Scientific Research Institute for System Analysis of the RAS elected him as Scientific Head of the Institute.

Betelin is a member of the Department of Nanotechnology and Information Technologies of the RAS, Director of the Federal State Institution "Scientific Research Institute for System Analysis of the RAS, Co-Chairman of the Council of the RAS for the Coordination of Scientific Research in the direction “Strategic Information Technologies, Including the Creation of Supercomputers and Software Development,” Member of the Scientific and Technical Council of the Military-Industrial Commission under the Government of the Russian Federation, Member of the Government Commission on the use of information technologies to improve the quality of life and business conditions, Member of the Section of the Council “Nanotechnologies and Information Technologies” for awarding prizes of the Government of the Russian Federation, Member of Scientific and Technical Council of RUSNANO.
Research Interests
Vladimir B. Betelin is a well-known expert in the field of information technologies and automation systems. He made a great contribution to the theory and practice of instrumental software systems development, interactive machine graphics and geometrical modeling systems, as well as software for mechanical engineering CAD systems. In 1980–1991, he supervised the development and implementation of the main software components of mechanical engineering CAD systems at Automobile Plant ZiL, as well as the family of the first Russian graphic workstations BESTA.
Currently V.B. Betelin’s research interests are: supercomputer technologies, architecture, and Supercomputer element base. The main results of scientific activity of V.B. Betelin for the last 20 years: Russian information-secure hardware and software platform, submicron 32x and 64x microprocessors with RISC-architecture, submicron VLSI, Russian real-time operating system, as well as modern automation tools for application software development, Russian production line for VLSI with submicron design norms 0.5/0.35/0.25 µm.
Academic Advising
V.B. Betelin has been teaching at the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics of Moscow State University for many years. He is the author of a number of tutorials for students. In 1975–1988 under his leadership, training compilers with extended diagnostics, dialog tools of access to application software packages, and a number of other systems were developed and implemented in the educational process at MSU.
V.B. Betelin is the Head of the High Performance Computing Department at Lomonosov Moscow State University. He was the supervisor for one Doctor of Science and eight candidates of sciences.

V.B. Betelin is the author and co-author of 111 scientific works, including 10 monographs and 1 patent.
V.B. Betelin is the Deputy Editor-in-Chief of the Information Technologies and Computer Systems journal, RAS, a member of editorial boards of journals Fundamental and Applied Mathematics of Lomonosov Moscow State University, Russian Technological Journal of MIREA – Russian Technological University.

V.B. Betelin is Laureate of the State Prize of the Russian Federation, Winner of the 2014 Russian Federation Government Prize in Science and Technology, recipient of the Order “For Merit to the Fatherland,” II class, Order of Friendship, and Order of Honor.
